President Trump has been back in power for less than four months, but already his policies, like imposing tariffs and upending alliances, have rippled into domestic political battles around the world.
In major votes in Canada and Australia over the past two weeks, the center-left incumbents surged ahead of conservative opposition forces and went on to win. And both opposition leaders lost not just the elections, but their own seats in Parliament. Read more about the anti-Trump bump.
In Australia’s election, which took place on Saturday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pulled off a stunning landslide victory to clinch a second term. “The economic uncertainties and international convulsions emanating from Washington make the option of Albanese — who is practical and understated, if unlikely to attempt bold moves to address larger challenges facing the country — more palatable,” said Victoria Kim, our Australia correspondent.
Canada: Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet Trump at the White House tomorrow for a high-stakes encounter.
Romania: George Simion, a right-wing nationalist who has promised to “Make Romania Great Again,” bucked the anti-Trump trend, winning the first round of the presidential election.
