Kyrie Irving Traded From Nets to Mavericks After Request

Kyrie Irving, whose run with the Nets included hopes for an N.B.A. championship and a series of personal decisions that caused him to miss games, has been traded to the Dallas Mavericks, a person familiar with the situation said on Sunday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced and he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Irving is in the final year of his contract with the Nets, and had been hoping to work out a contract extension with the team. With little progress on that, he asked the Nets to trade him last week.

Since signing with the Nets in 2019, Irving has played in about half of the Nets’ games. He missed most of last season because he declined to comply with New York City’s vaccine requirement for private sector employees.

This season, Irving was suspended after he posted a link to an antisemitic film to his social media accounts. The Nets disciplined him after he refused to apologize or disavow antisemitism. Irving missed eight games during the suspension and returned after he apologized during a televised interview.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
